Update to Search Engine Optimization reports

In October, we made Google Webmaster Tools available to all users in Google Analytics, allowing everyone to surface Google search data in new Search Engine Optimization reports. Starting today, Webmaster Tools will update how they calculate data to make it better match expectations about what a search engine ranking really means.

Based on their research, the answer to the question "What is your rank in search results?" is the first position of a link to your site. Previously we reported the average position of all links to your site. Now your Google Analytics reports will be updated to reflect the first position.

An example calculation







We anticipate that this new method of calculation will more accurately match your expectations about how a link's position in Google Search results should be reported.

How will this affect my Google Analytics data?
This change will affect your Search Engine Optimization reports, when your data in Google Analytics Search Engine Optimization reports will be calculated using the new method. Historical data will not change. Note that the change in calculation means that the Average Position metric will usually stay the same or decrease, corresponding to the same or improved search ranking.

Good work, but:

im still getting no love from hitting the customize button in the Search engine Optimization reports.

And i see the following text after i hit the question mark next to average position:

The average ranking of your website URLs for the query or queries. For example, if your site's URL appears at position 3 for one query and position 7 for another query, the average position would be 5 (3+7/2).

This sounds great, but I've just check my Search Engine Optimisation Report and there's no data since 24th Jan 2012. Complete flatline!

This is certainly a change we are happy to take. The average positions have appeared alot lower than we have seen other reporting presenting. I would be interested to know how the social SERPs will be incorporated into this change?

Is this in the UK too yet? I'm still seeing positions like 1.3 - surely it should just be showing whole numbers, not .anything if it's stating the first position of the site in the serps?

I have never understood how the keywords I see in Analytics for my site (believe these based on product understanding), match the keywords I see in web master tools keyword stack for my site.

This search engine optimization improvement brings it to the forefront. Shouldn't I see symmetry? e.g. for a specific period - the keywords as a secondary dimension on an analytics screen should match the Search Optimization keywords. The data does not reflect properly for me. I have a client who is in first place on Google South Africa and Google South Africa (South Africa) yet the report says that they are in 8.7 position. Why. It is a co.za domain thus I have not set Google Analytics to display country. Why is this.
